Hornady 3-Way Cutter Features

The Hornady 3-Way Cutter combines case trimming, inside chamfering and outside deburring in one cutter assembly. As a result, reloaders can complete three common case-preparation tasks with one tool.

In addition, the cutter uses separate carbide blades for the inside and outside of the case mouth. The inside blade uses a 15-degree cutting angle, while the outside blade uses a 30-degree cutting angle. Therefore, the cutter prepares both edges of the case mouth during the trimming process.

Furthermore, Hornady supplies four calibre-specific pilots with the cutter. These pilots cover .224, .243, .264 and .308 calibre applications. Consequently, the user can select the appropriate pilot for the cartridge case being prepared.

Each pilot guides the cutter into the case mouth. In addition, each pilot provides shoulders that help set the cutting blades to the required position. As a result, the user can establish a repeatable cutter setup for the selected calibre.

Furthermore, the cutter body uses a 3/8″-24 thread for compatible trimmer applications. Therefore, the cutter can attach to a suitable trimmer with the matching connection.

In turn, this arrangement allows the trimming and case-mouth preparation operations to take place during the same process. Consequently, the user does not need to change between separate trimming, chamfering and deburring tools.

Hornady 3-Way Cutter Calibre Options

The supplied pilots cover four calibre applications:

• .224 calibre
• .243 calibre
• .264 calibre
• .308 calibre

First, select the pilot that matches the cartridge case. Next, install the pilot in the cutter body. Then, adjust the cutting blades against the pilot shoulders.

Afterwards, secure the adjustment screws and check the cutter position. This setup establishes the cutting position for the selected case before trimming begins.

Once adjusted, the cutter removes excess case length. At the same time, the inside blade creates the internal chamfer, while the outside blade removes the external burr. Therefore, one cutter assembly performs all three preparation operations.

In addition, the four supplied pilots allow the same cutter assembly to support the listed calibre sizes. However, the pilot must match the cartridge case being processed.

Cutter Adjustment and Case Preparation

Before use, select the correct pilot for the cartridge case. Next, position the inside and outside cutters against the pilot shoulders. Then, tighten the adjustment screws to secure the selected settings.

After setup, trim the cartridge case and inspect the finished case mouth. In addition, check the case length against the appropriate cartridge specification.

As a result, the user can confirm both the case length and the quality of the finished case mouth before continuing with further loading operations.

Furthermore, the cutter is intended for compatible Hornady trimmer applications. Therefore, check the trimmer connection before installation.

Also, follow the manufacturer’s instructions when adjusting and operating the cutter. In particular, inspect the finished cases after trimming rather than relying only on the cutter setting.
