MagnetoSpeed Sporter Ballistics Chronograph

The MagnetoSpeed Sporter Ballistics Chronograph is a barrel-mounted chronograph that measures projectile velocity using electromagnetic sensors. Unlike optical chronographs, it does not rely on sunlight or artificial light, so changing lighting conditions do not affect its basic operation.

The Sporter suits centre-fire rifles and revolvers with barrel diameters from 0.5 to 1 inch. In addition, it accommodates muzzle brakes and flash hiders up to 2.7 inches long. Therefore, it works well with many sporter-style rifle barrels and long-barrelled revolvers.

MagnetoSpeed Sporter Chronograph Features

The electromagnetic sensor detects the projectile as it passes over two precisely spaced sensors. The display then calculates velocity from the projectile’s measured travel time between those sensors. As a result, the system can provide consistent velocity measurements without the optical alignment required by traditional chronographs.

The display uses a simple one-button control system. Furthermore, it records recent shot information and provides statistics including average velocity, extreme spread and standard deviation. The display switches on when the sensor cable connects to it, which keeps the operating procedure straightforward.

Three sensitivity settings allow the user to adjust the system for different projectile and cartridge combinations. In addition, the easy-access battery compartment allows the user to replace the supplied 9V battery without a screwdriver.

The integral strap and metal buckle secure the sensor assembly to the barrel. Meanwhile, thick and thin rubber V-block spacers help establish the required sensor position. The Sporter requires the projectile to pass above the sensor deck at the correct height and with suitable horizontal clearance.

MagnetoSpeed Sporter Chronograph Compatibility

The Sporter fits barrels between 0.5 and 1 inch in diameter. Therefore, it suits many conventional sporter-profile rifle barrels. It can also accommodate muzzle brakes and flash hiders up to 2.7 inches long.

However, the Sporter does not suit suppressors. Shooters who need a chronograph for larger barrels or suppressors should consider the MagnetoSpeed V3 instead, which supports barrel and suppressor diameters up to 2 inches.

The unit is intended for centre-fire rifles and revolvers. It does not suit airguns or rimfire firearms. Consequently, users should confirm compatibility before mounting the sensor.

The Sporter can measure suitable lead and steel projectiles, although lead-only ammunition may require a higher sensitivity setting. MagnetoSpeed also advises against using the system with #7 birdshot and smaller because accuracy can decrease.
