Hornady Hand Neck Turn Tool
The Hornady Hand Neck Turn Tool provides a controlled method for preparing cartridge case necks for precision handloading. The tool uses a calibre-specific mandrel to support the case neck during turning. As a result, the cutter can remove material from the outside of the neck while the case remains aligned with the mandrel.
Hornady’s current Neck Turn Tool uses an adjustment knob with .0005-inch increments. The knob can also operate without detents for continuous adjustment. Therefore, the reloader can establish the cutter position gradually when preparing cases for a specific neck-wall thickness.
The current Hornady tool also accepts a drill for powered operation. However, the drill is not included. Manual operation remains useful when the reloader wants direct control over case rotation and cutter movement during neck preparation.
Case Neck Turning and Mandrels
The Hornady Hand Neck Turn Tool uses interchangeable mandrels for different cartridge diameters. The current tool includes 22 Cal., 6mm, 6.5mm and 30 Cal. mandrels. Hornady also offers additional mandrels for 17 Cal., 20 Cal., 25 Cal., 270 Cal., 7mm, 8mm, 338 Cal., 35 Cal. and 375 Cal. applications.
Each mandrel supports the case neck while the cutter removes material from its outer surface. Consequently, the selected mandrel must match the cartridge and case being prepared. For example, the Hornady Neck Turn Mandrel 6mm provides the appropriate mandrel option for 6mm cases.
Likewise, the Hornady Neck Turn Mandrel .338 provides an option for .338 calibre case preparation. Additional mandrels allow the same Hornady tool to cover a wider range of cartridge sizes.
The current tool also includes cutters for 30° and 40° shoulder angles. In addition, it accepts standard Hornady shell holders for securing the case during the neck-turning process. The shell holder must match the cartridge being prepared.
Before turning cases, Hornady recommends sizing the brass and checking the existing neck thickness. The Hornady instructions also recommend using the Neck Wall Thickness Gauge when setting the cutter position. Therefore, measuring the case neck before and during preparation helps establish the required adjustment.
The cutter adjustment uses .0005-inch movement per detent. Consequently, the reloader can make small changes while working toward the required neck-wall thickness. Hornady also notes that case necks may vary in concentricity before turning, so the initial cut may not contact the entire neck uniformly.
