Hornady L&L Neck Turn Tool

The Hornady L&L Neck Turn Tool provides a controlled method for preparing cartridge case necks. Hornady designed the tool for a wide range of case lengths. It also accepts a drill, which makes powered neck turning faster and easier. The drill is not included. In addition, the adjustment system allows the reloader to select defined .0005-inch increments or use continuous adjustment without detents.

The tool uses standard Hornady shell holders to retain the case during neck turning. Therefore, the case remains supported while the cutting system removes material from the neck. The design suits reloaders who need controlled neck-wall preparation for precision ammunition. Moreover, the powered spindle can reduce the manual effort required when processing multiple cases.

Case Neck Preparation

The Hornady L&L Neck Turn Tool includes four mandrels covering common calibres. The supplied mandrels are for 22 Cal., 6mm, 6.5mm and 30 Cal. Hornady lists additional mandrels separately for other calibres, allowing the same tool to support a wider range of cartridges. For example, available options include 17 Cal., 20 Cal., 25 Cal., 270 Cal., 7mm, 8mm, 338 Cal., 35 Cal. and 375 Cal.

The included cutting system provides options for different shoulder angles. Hornady’s current catalogue specifies two cutters for 30° and 40° shoulder angles. Consequently, the appropriate cutter can be selected according to the case design being prepared.

The adjustment knob provides either indexed .0005-inch movement or infinite adjustment. This allows the reloader to establish the required cutting position and then maintain that setting during case preparation. Likewise, consistent adjustment helps make repeated neck-turning operations easier to control.

For precision case preparation, the Hornady Neck Turn Mandrel 6mm provides an additional mandrel option for 6mm cases. The Hornady Neck Turn Mandrel .338 provides the corresponding option for .338 calibre cases. However, each mandrel must match the intended cartridge and case-neck application.

The shell holder is not included with the tool. Instead, the unit uses standard Hornady shell holders selected for the cartridge being prepared. Furthermore, the instructions identify the drill as an optional power source rather than part of the supplied tool.
