Hornady Modified Case Features

The Hornady Modified Case works with Lock-N-Load O.A.L. Gauges to measure bullet seating depth and bullet jump. In particular, the case allows the gauge to position a bullet in the rifle chamber so you can measure the distance between the bullet and rifling.

Each modified case matches a specific rifle chambering. Therefore, you should select the case that matches the rifle before taking measurements.

The case head has a thread that connects the modified case to a compatible Hornady O.A.L. Gauge. In addition, the neck provides approximately .002″ additional clearance for bullets intended for the selected cartridge.

Hornady makes these cases to SAAMI specifications for supported chamberings. As a result, the modified case provides a consistent connection between the rifle chamber, bullet and O.A.L. Gauge.

Furthermore, either Hornady O.A.L. Gauge model can use a compatible modified case. The Straight model suits bolt-action and single-shot rifles, while the Curved model also provides access through the ejection port on suitable rifles.

Hornady Modified Case Chambering Options

Hornady produces modified cases for many popular rifle chamberings. For example, options include 204 Ruger, 223 Remington, 22-250 Remington, 243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 270 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington, 7mm Remington Magnum, 308 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield.

In addition, the wider Hornady range covers many other chamberings. Consequently, check the available variation against the rifle chamber before selecting a case.

For less common chamberings, Hornady also offers a custom modification service for suitable brass. Therefore, users with wildcat or other unsupported chamberings can check whether a suitable custom option is available.

Using the Modified Case with an O.A.L. Gauge

The modified case works with a compatible Hornady Lock-N-Load O.A.L. Gauge Straight. In particular, the Straight gauge suits bolt-action and single-shot rifles where the chamber provides direct access.

First, clean the rifle barrel and chamber before taking a measurement. Next, confirm that the modified case matches the rifle chamber. Then, insert the case into the chamber and close the bolt carefully to check the fit.

If the case does not fit correctly, do not force the bolt. Instead, check the chambering and modified-case selection before continuing.

After checking the fit, thread the modified case onto the O.A.L. Gauge. Then, place the bullet into the case mouth and position the gauge assembly in the chamber according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The gauge allows you to position the bullet against the rifling and take the required measurement. As a result, you can use the measurement when setting bullet seating depth or checking bullet jump.

Hornady states that the O.A.L. Gauge system can produce measurements accurate to approximately .001″. However, bullet dimensions can vary between individual bullets.

For this reason, check bullet length uniformity when taking seating-depth measurements. In addition, use the same measurement method when comparing different bullets or load setups.
