Hornady L&L Powder Measure

The Hornady L&L Powder Measure is a versatile powder measure for reloading rifle and handgun cartridges. Its Lock-N-Load design uses interchangeable rotors and metering inserts, allowing one measure to handle a wide range of powder charges.

The measure uses a quick-change metering system. Therefore, the user can change compatible metering inserts by pressing the release button rather than adjusting the complete powder measure each time.

Hornady lists a charge range from 0.5 to 265 grains, depending on the rotor and metering insert used. In addition, the standard package includes a rifle rotor and metering insert. Pistol rotors and inserts are available separately.

The metering insert uses an O-ring to provide adjustable tension during charge adjustment. As a result, the user can make fine incremental changes before securing the setting with the lock ring.

The measure uses a close-fitting drum and rotor design. Furthermore, Hornady specifies only 0.002 inch of clearance between these components, which helps provide smooth operation with different powder types.

Two powder drop tubes are included for cases from .204 through .45 calibre. Therefore, the user can select the largest tube that fits the case mouth. Hornady also lists an optional .17-calibre drop tube.

The Hornady L&L Powder Measure supports several mounting options. For example, users can mount it to a bench with a standard mounting bracket and lock ring, or use Lock-N-Load bushings with the Fast Load Powder Measure Stand.

The Lock-N-Load system allows users to keep preset metering inserts with their die sets. Consequently, changing between cartridges can require only a quick insert change followed by verification of the new charge.

The standard rifle rotor and metering insert form part of the package. However, users loading smaller pistol charges need the compatible pistol rotor and metering insert, which Hornady lists separately.

The pistol rotor uses a smaller chamber for more precise metering of charges from 0.5 to 17 grains. In addition, Hornady lists standard pistol metering insert 050116 and pistol rotor with standard pistol metering insert 050128.

The powder measure can therefore cover a broad range of cartridges when the correct rotor and insert combination is used. Nevertheless, users should always verify the actual charge weight with a suitable scale and follow current published load data.

The measure carries Hornady item number 050069. Furthermore, its quick-change system reduces the need to purchase separate powder measures for different cartridge and charge requirements.
