Hornady Powder Cop

The Hornady Powder Cop is a powder-charge checking device for progressive reloading presses. It installs after the powder-drop station and provides a visual indication of charge level as each cartridge case moves through the loading cycle.

The Powder Cop uses a die body, stem and rubber O-ring to indicate the position of the powder charge. As the charge level changes, the O-ring moves along the stem. Therefore, the operator can identify changes in charge level during the loading process.

Hornady designed the Powder Cop for use on progressive presses where checking every dropped charge can be difficult. In addition, the visual indicator allows the operator to monitor each loaded case without removing it from the press.

The device works with .22 calibre and larger cartridges. Furthermore, Hornady supplies plastic fingers to help centre smaller cases, with the instructions showing their use up to .458 Winchester.

The Powder Cop can indicate differences caused by an empty case, double charge or other changes in powder level. As a result, it provides an additional visual check during progressive loading.

The Hornady Powder Cop is intended as a visual checking device rather than a weighing instrument. The operator should use a suitable powder scale to establish and verify the required charge weight.

The current Hornady instructions show separate positions for an empty case, correct charge and double charge. Therefore, the operator can use the O-ring position as a visual reference while monitoring the progressive loading process.

The die body adjusts to accommodate different cartridge case lengths. In addition, the stem can be reversed for .22 through .30 calibre cases, while the supplied plastic fingers can help centre smaller cases.

Hornady specifically warns that the Powder Cop is not a substitute for weighing random charges. It provides a visual check for every round but does not replace proper loading procedures or charge-weight verification.

The Powder Cop forms part of a progressive press setup and is installed after the powder-drop station. Therefore, it can add an additional monitoring step without requiring the operator to remove every case for visual inspection.
